LEARNING OUTCOMES

After the course the student (ILO’s):

  • Can describe different ice conditions and their effect on ship operations
  • Understands the influence of the ship-ice interaction process and hull shape on the ice resistance
  • Can estimate ship performance in different ice conditions
  • Understands how ice-induced loads on the ship hull can be defined
  • Understands ice-class rules and their impact on the ship design

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Different ice conditions, mechanical properties of ice, ship resistance and performance in various ice conditions, propulsion in ice, power requirements, ice induced loads on a ship hull, ice strengthening principles for a ship hull and ice class rules. As a part of the course assignment, the students shall (if the situation allows) get onboard an icebreaker to make observations from icebreaker and fleet operations.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    The final grade will consist of 50% from the exam and 50% from the course assignment. In order to pass the course, the exam and the assignment needs to be passed separately. In order to pass these, a minimum of 50% from the maximum points needs to be obtained.

Workload

    • Lectures: 2 h/week, total 12 h
    • Self learning material (videos and reading) 2 h/week, total 18 h
    • Assignment (done in groups)
      • Exercise sessions (small group guidance) 1 h/week, total 12 h
      • Independent working, total 36 h
      • Icebreaker excursion (work towards the assignment), total 10 h
      • Final analysis and reporting, total 20 h
    • Preparing for the exam: 24 hours
