Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

After the course, you will be able to:

  • Utilize systematic methods for materials selection
  • Compare and choose materials on the basis of the design requirements.
  • Criticize and compare alternative materials solutions for designs.
  • Examine the product life cycle phases.
  • Identify major trends in the evolution of the state of the art in engineering materials and their implications for mechanical design.

  • valid for whole curriculum period:

This course introduces students to the process of material selection, with emphasis on materials selection in mechanical design, and teaches basic knowledge and skills about material selection criteria and their use in systematic material selection. A brief overview of the state of the art in engineering materials is also included, with a discussion of major trends that affect mechanical design.

The course consists of independent reading and computer exercises, class discussions and a final assignment where students apply what they have learned in practice. Different from conventional courses, this one is organized via the "multiform teaching". Each "multiform teaching" session will include a preliminary task which must be submitted to the corresponding MyCourses workshop before the class. These tasks will guide the students in independently studying from the textbook, and serve as the basis for discussion in class. Part of the course grade is based on timely completion and quality of these task reports and active participation in the discussions in class and online. Instead of an examination, students apply in their project course what they learned from this course, and write up a case study about materials selection for a component.

During the course students will learn to use a computer aided material selection program, Cambridge Engineering Selector (CES). All students can install their personal copy of the CES software to their own computers. The CES software is installed on computers in computer classrooms of the Mechanical Engineering Main Building. The license is available at

Further Information
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

Textbook: Ashby, M. F., Materials Selection in Mechanical Design (4th or 5th edition recommended) is available in the Aalto Library as an e-book. You can visit Aalto-Finna ( webpage, log in, and search for this material, it may direct you to this page Materials selection in mechanical design.

Software: The exercises also require the use of the GRANTA software, which is available in the computer classrooms in K1-building. But during the coronavirus pandemic period, you are highly recommended to install the program to your own PC (Windows 7 or newer is needed. No macOS or Linux version is available, but the program seems to be fully functional in virtual environments). You can download GRANTA EduPack program from Aalto software download service (Aalto user credentials log in is needed). If you only have a macOS or Linux operated system by your side, we suggest you to perform on virtual machine instead, or to get access to Windows classroom computers remotely from your own device using the VDI system (e.g., or VMware Horizon Client, for more information, please refer to Remote access to Windows classroom computers). For detailed software install instruction, you are referred to the MyCourses website, where a systematic instruction manual is provided.
