CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content

The course consists of an individual experimental project, lectures, workshops, tutoring sessions, group work and critiques. Students are challenged to develop alternative approaches to concept building to form the base for their personal project. The personal project is explored further with practice-led methods in the workshops. Basic studio courses can be integrated to the course. The workshops and/or the integrated basic studio courses introduce the students to traditional, novel and explorative textile design and manufacturing processes. Students with previous experience in the textile studios take part in a groupwork project within the course in which the teams experiment with innovative methods of combining technology and textile techniques. Students document the results in form of a written and visual statement (photography). The projects and documentation are presented in a course exhibition.
Assessment Methods and Criteria

The final grade for the course is based on student’s attendance and participation in the contact teaching as well as group work and the assignments that the students complete during the course. Students must attend and actively participate in at least 80% of the contact teachings. Introductory session is mandatory.

The scope of the Experimental Textile Design course is 12 cr, which can include max.2 studio courses based on the student's personal study plan approved by the academic advisor. After the approval student should register to the studio courses separately.
With integrated studio courses, the scope of the core course can be 3, 6, 9 or 12 cr. The studio courses that can be integrated are: MUO-E1045 Printed Fabrics Studio (3cr) and MUO-E1075 Woven Fabrics Studio (6cr) or MUO-E1069 Knits and Knitwear Studio (6cr). (Please note: the combination of Woven Fabrics studio and Knits and Knitwear Studio is not possible)

- The course is intended for 1st-year FaCT students.
- Students without BA-level knowledge in textile studios (weaving, knitting, printing) must take one or two integrated textile studio courses. Attendance to these courses is restricted and needs to be approved by the student's academic advisor (PSP/HOPS)
- Students with previous BA-level knowledge in textile studios (weaving, knitting, printing) take the Textiles and Mechatronics/Explorative samples Project within the Experimental Textile Design course.
- The course is intended for 1st-year FaCT students.
