LEARNING OUTCOMES

On successful completion of this course, students will be able to

1. work in a group to plan, organize and carry out a shared exhibition
2. select, arrange, produce and present their own artistic work suited to the exhibition context
3. assess varied exhibition practices and consider how diverse means of presentation may impact on an individual art work
4. utilize and apply various kinds of installation tools, techniques and materials that support the presentation and the planned outcome
5. critically assess, compose and write, and use various types of exhibition texts
6. work professionally and independently in co-operation with diverse actors of exhibition and publication processes

Content

  This course prepares for a group exhibition, and it includes planning and implementing a group exhibition as well as composing varied text material related to presentation and publication.

  The course is only for second year Master's students of Photography major who present the artistic component of their thesis or a part of it in the exhibition.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

  Participation in teaching, completed assignments.

  Minimum 80% attendance.

Workload

  3 ECTS ≈ 81h

  Total hours 81h/Contact teaching / group workshop appr. 50 h.
  Independent work appr. 31 h.
  The artistic work is part of the thesis, for which the credits will be given separately.

  Preliminary plan (in English only)

  Workshop: planning and producing a group exhibition

  Lectures: on varied installation practices, challenges and advantages of group and shared presentations,
  discussing curatorial aspects

  Practise-based work: Installing an exhibition, installation work in practice. Planning, designing and composing exhibition publication materials and other needed texts, such as students' own artist bios and project descriptions, and exhibition texts. All work related to dismantling of an exhibition.

  Presentations: Possible artist talks or guided tours during the exhbition.

  Assessment day: Critical review and discussion of the exhibition and the project as a whole.
