CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    - fundamentals of graphic storytelling, visual narrative and sequential image-making

    - fundamentals of different illustration genres and the contemporary illustration landscape - introduction to the professional, cultural, theoretical and historical contexts of pictorial storytelling

    - visual explorations of the boundaries of illustration

    - visual explorations on personal visual language

    - creating illustration sequence for a defined context.

    During the course we will work on two illustration assignments.

    1. The first one will be based on an existing text/article. 

    2. The second one will be based around a theme. Our objective is to set up an exhibition around the second assignment.


    In addition we will have two other assignments:

    1. Documenting our learning process into a folder, with sketches and short notes on self-reflection.

    2. Finding and reading an article or book about related content and writing a short summary about our findings.

     


Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Participation in teaching, completed assignments.

    Minimum 80% attendance.

    The main focus is not the quality of the final work.

    It is about participation, experimenting and self reflection and the means to document this learning process.

    During the course the teacher will keep track of each student's participation, completed assignments, process and sketches and overall motivation.

    Always have at hand your go-to sketching equipment, be this a laptop/tablet or a traditional pen and sketchbook.

    In case your natural sketching method is digital, be prepared to bring printouts to class during the course.

    Also please always carry pens and markers, a few sheets of paper and scissors just in case.

    During the course I will let you know beforehand if we need some specific tools.

    We will be documenting our process into a folder, but we can talk more about that in our first meeting.
