Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Develop cutting-edge automation competences: the programme boasts theoretical skills and practical expertise at the interconnection between communications and data science
  • Learn how to transition towards security and privacy by integrating it into the design of all types of networks, specially in IoT applications
  • Command the managing tools in distributed computer networks commonly deployed in IoT
  • Collect, communicate, coordinate, and leverage data from connected devices
  • Use a broad range of structuring and analysis tools to extract meaning from patterns.
  • Develop professional skills – project management, professional communications, and teamworking competences through practical experience in an international environment.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

Introduction to Communications Engineering, Automation, Security, Embedded systems, Dependability, Data Science, Professional skills, and Project management training

    Students will learn about:

    • Emerging information technologies – the future in industry and society
    • Emerging communication and network technologies
    • Distributed computer networks
    • Artificial intelligence in networking

  • applies in this implementation

Communication networks generate enormous amounts of data, both from their customers and their network operators, meaning artificial intelligence is increasingly dominating networking domains.

Customer data is related to their use of services and applications, and network data is gathered from intelligent devices (cellphones, smart appliances, IoT sensors, etc). Likewise, distributed systems have become the norm and are ubiquitously deployed through IoT.

Telecommunication operators and other big players in the industry are in great demand of experts in both telecommunications and data science who can also identify the weak security spots in many contemporary technologies.

This advanced course covers a range of timely, industry-relevant topics related mathematics, modelling and analysis of signals and systems, electronics, data science, artificial intelligence and machine learning, networks and network security, distributed systems, and the Internet of Things. Students will further acquire expertise in professional skills trainings.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

(project work 50%, examination 50%) and compulsory attendance (attendance list).

  • applies in this implementation

    Grading scale: 0-5 (0 = fail, 1 = poor, 2 = satisfactory, 3 = good, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent)

    •Group Project: 40%
    •Peer assessment: 10%
    •Examination: 50%

Compulsory attendance (attendance list, sickness exception sent by email).
A passing grade must be achieved in ALL categories in order to pass this course. Only active students should be named in the report and presentations.

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    • Contact hours: 20h (2 x 90 min lectures for 5 days), 40 hours project work
    • 21 hours independent work
