LEARNING OUTCOMES
After the successful completion of the course, the students should be able to:
- Identify the basic structural principles of different types of structures
- Distinguish the structural systems of existing structures
- Conceptually identify how the forces are transferred through the structures to the foundation
- Apply appropriate structural solutions for a variety of different problems
- Be able to deal with the preliminary structural design phase (conceptual design)

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
valid for whole curriculum period:
- The structural designer has to understand his essential position even in early (architectural) design phases. On the other hand, the structural engineer has to be prepared for this stage of design in a way that he/she can proactively and with ecological, social and cultural responsibility contribute to the project development.
- Introduction to selected structural solutions and examples, in order to identify static systems of existing constructions as well as the soil ground interaction.Core content
Complementary
Special
- Equilibrium equations
- Free body diagram
- Estimation of internal forces (bending moments, shear forces, axial forces)
- Evaluate different structural systems (trusses, beams, columns, frames, funicular structures)
- Distinguish between statically determinate and statically indeterminate structures
- Stability of structural system
- Mastering of conceptual design
- Three-dimensional understanding of structures
- Graphical analysis for designing structures
- Cost efficiency of design
- Aesthetic aspects of design
- Soft skills
- Computer software for calculations
- Rehabilitation and reuse of structures
