After the course the student

  • is able to work independently in laboratory.
  • is able to draw conclusions based on experimental results: understands how the structure of macromolecules affect e.g. thermal and mechanical -properties of polymer materials.
  • knows in practice different processing methods for polymers
  • can analyse experimental results and draw appropriate conclusions
  • can write a technical report

    Students do experimental work that supports their theoretical studies in polymer technology, i.e. they will learn in practice about polymerization, polymer analysis, polymer processing, and testing. After each of the lab exercise, students will compile the results and write a technical report.

    The course consists of 7 laboratory exercises and their reporting. The course ends with a compulsory seminar.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Each of the exercise (lab&report) will be graded on the scale 1-5. Each of the works must be passed (at least grade 1, i.e. 50% of the points). The final grade will be the average grade of the exercises

    Grading of the exercise is divided into three parts (max percentage of the points)

    1. Each exercise starts with a questioning of related theory, procedures and safety issues (5-10%)

    2. How the students perform in the lab (5-10%)

    3. Written report (80-85%)

    In addition, the final seminar is compulsory

    Introduction lecture + final seminar 5 h

    Lab excersises 40 h (group work,  >50 % of the lab is done without the presence of the teacher/assistant)

    Independent studying 90 h (reports are done together with the group)

    In addition to lab exercises, also the final seminar is compulsory

    Only for students in majors 'Fibre and polymer engineering' and 'Nordic five tech in polymer technology'. All from those majors are accepted if enrolled in time.


    A course implementation may be cancelled if the number of students enrolled to the course implementation does not meet the required minimum of five students. In the case of cancelled course implementations, the students enrolled to them must be provided with an alternative way of completing the course or be advised to take some other applicable course.
