Part B is titled as: Geographies of Photography. The instructor for Part B is Donald Weber donald.weber@aalto.fi

    Part A : IMAGE SPACE

Image Space is a course to introduce your practises to each others work.

The focus of this course is in the use of space in your art practice.

We will talk about the space in images and the images in space. We take a look at art processes that use space as material and works that contextualise space and the ideas of space. We will take a look at artist like Walter de Maria, Paul Graham, Mikko Rikala, Lydia Okamura, Tara Donovan, Alvin Lucier etc.

This hand on course with number of assignments. All course participant will work on their existing works.

We will work on teams of 3 to conceptualise an hypothetical exhibition proposal.

Each team will build a scale model of the given exhibition space and re-think ones own works in terms of concept, content, size, shape, production, installation etc . The idea is that you can be experimental and creative, and to create dialogue between the space and the other artist on your team.

The exhibition should have an over all concept, title and a small statement. Each team will present their proposal at the end of the course and get feed back.

Something that used to be small can now be big or something that used to be on the wall can now be on floor or something that has been an image plane can now appear as volume or something that has been visible could be invisible…

In addition to this we also do some experiments on perception of space.

We will use cinema as subject for kind of live model drawing, we will be deep-looking into space with something I call “gateless-gate”.  The gateless-gate is min 1 hour exorcise of listening and looking, of which each student will to create a verbal report to present to the class. We will be also visiting the anechoic chamber here at Aalto campus and spend some time in silence and in darkness. And if you feel uncomfortable with the idea, it’s ok to pass.

What you need for this course is some existing images, artworks that you might want to include to your hypothetical exhibition.

The main thing at this class is to be open, relaxed and heading toward not know solutions. You also get to know each others works and ways of thinking.

Failing is ok a considered as a part of the process. Fail, fail again, fail better.

Everybody will need sketch/workbook to make notes on the process. What “sketch book” is not defined: paper, pad, camera, audio device  play dough….

    Show who you are!
