LEARNING OUTCOMES
After completing the course students are able to:
- plan and carry out a visual communication design project
- understand principles of managing a project and working as a team
- differentiate different phases of the design process
- explain the means and value of conducting background research
- collect information on user needs and requirements
- develop a design solution iteratively
- understand principles of testing and evaluating design
- justify design solutions and communicate and present professionally

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
valid for whole curriculum period:
The student works with a visual communication design project in a small group. The student becomes acquainted with the double diamond design process and understands the importance of user-centered design, background research, testing, and iteration for a successful design outcome.
The comprehensive course provides the theoretical, methodological, and practical ability to work as a designer in client projects. The design project that all students will undertake varies each year, but it is typically related to visual identity design and its applications.
English language teaching is integrated into the course, and collaboration with the Language Center provides students with professional communication and presentation skills that also support project work.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
valid for whole curriculum period:
Participation in teaching, completed assignments. Minimum 80% attendance. See MyCourses for more detailed information on evaluations methods and criteria.
Workload
valid for whole curriculum period:
9 ECTS ≈ 243h
contact teaching 88h/Other 155h
Project work and presentations, independent and group work, lectures, discussions, and reflection
1 Actual project work based on a client brief (PBL)
2 Double diamond process. Activities are divided according to the phase of the project
3 Students present the insights they have found in the background research phase
4 Students present alternative design concepts and directions at the interim critique
5 Students develop and iterate the selected design based on feedback and testing
6 In the final presentation students present a fully developed design concept with its applications and justify the design solutions
