Where the Lines Cross: An Introduction to Classical Mexican Cinema
22.-26.4.2023 (week 17)
Classical Mexican cinema is an eerie non-entity in the international context: One tends to be aware of its vastness, but knows very little about it. Too often, it gets reduced to a few so-called masterpieces that supposedly represent the whole. In reality, though, these few incessantly shown works and the discourse around them only block the view of the whole: how the artists also do artisanal genre jobs with grace and artistic savvy, same way that the industry's accumulated knowledge can carry an average craftsman to unexpected greatness. In this course, we'll investigate how the intelligence and sensitivity of a community creates meaning and delight for the masses by way of choice works from some of classical Mexican cinema's finest, like Emilio Fernández, Roberto Gavaldón or Julio Bracho, as well as some of its luminaries in film history's shadow, like Tito Davison or Tulio Demicheli.
Assessment Methods and Criteria

Evaluation on a scale of 0-5, based primarily on the essay or other individual assignment approved by the teacher in charge.
Workload

Contact teaching: Screenings, lectures, discussions (21hours)
Independent work: essay or other individual assignment approved by the teacher in charge (33 hours).
At least 80% participation in face-to-face teaching is mandatory to complete the course. If, due to absences, the student does not achieve the learning outcomes defined in the course description, the remaining 20% may have to be compensated as determined by the responsible teachers of the course.
All absences must be reported to the teachers in charge. The responsible teachers of the course will specify the necessary compensating assignments.Study methods changed by decision of Academic Committee for Arts, Design and Architecture on 1st of February 2023.
