KNOWLEDGE

Students gain knowledge and understanding of:

  • Research paradigms, methodologies, and methods in visual digital communication, art-based research, and art education
  • Relation between research methodologies, scientific and art-based methods, and theory in transdisciplinary settings
  • Problem-based, art-based, art pedagogical approaches to theories and practices of research

SKILLS

Students acquire skills in:

  • Seeking, analyzing, and discussing advanced research literature in art education, digital visual communication, and arts-based research
  • Applying theories and concepts from advanced research literature and practice in independent research projects
  • Evaluating and reflecting the implications of using artistic and scientific approaches, concepts, and practices in research

COMPETENCES

Students acquire competences for:

  • Independently initiating, planning, and conducting creative problem-solving in specific contexts of practice  
  • Combining creative and scientific research approaches when investigating issues in visual communication and art education
  • Recognizing novel contexts for transdisciplinary and creative problem-solving

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    In this course, we discuss theories, methodologies, and methods in research on digital visual communication, art, and education. We learn problem-based, art-based, and art pedagogical approaches to research practice through site-specific activities and advanced research literature. The course includes a five-days mandatory research symposium in either Aalto or Aalborg campus (location to be announced later).
