    Content 

    The course introduces artmaking as a tool for thinking. The method is learning by doing. Artistic practices are approached through observation, experience, materiality as well as conceptual perspectives. Working is task-based and guided. Through practical work, students are introduced to broad, basic concepts of art and design. 

    The course emphasizes discussion and interaction with peers. Through assignments, students are encouraged to challenge their familiar ways of artmaking and to expand their own perceptions of art. 

    Keywords: volume, proportion, shape, space, line, plane, mass, rhythm, texture, pattern, time, gravity, colour, light, and shadow.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Assessment is based on the student's personal progress, active participation, and ability to express and utilize what they have learned. The evaluation addresses the following issues:   

    • Reflection on one's own and others' artistic work and learning process using the concepts learned on the course.  
    • Development of artistic thinking and expression. 
    • Willingness to try new things. 
    • Participation in discussions, including sharing thoughts, listening, and giving space to others. 
    • Initiative and responsibility in studio work.  

    Completion of the course requires 80% attendance and completion of the given assignments by the deadline set by the teachers.

Workload

    Contact teaching under the guidance of teachers from two different fields of art, and independent work. Exercises based on observation and experience, which include critical reflection. Supervised work based on assignments given by teachers. Critique and discussion sessions. Varying techniques are used in the assignments.

    78 h independent work: Preparations and implementation of independent assignment, instructed in MyCourses. The assignment includes visiting museums and galleries independently. Possible preparations also for weekly assignments.
