LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the completion of this course, the doctoral student is able to:

• recognise the responsibilities they hold as researchers, and understand how the Finnish Responsible Conduct of Research guidelines govern research;
• identify the key ethical considerations that apply to their work, and be able to plan their research in a way that mitigates risk and follows relevant legislation/policy;
• understand the key concepts of research integrity;
• be familiar the processes for dealing with research misconduct in Finland;
• know how the various ethical review processes works, when they are necessary, and be familiar with the guidelines that govern them (e.g. The Ethical Principles of Research with Human Participants and Ethical Review in the Human Sciences in Finland TENK 2019);
• understand principles of responsible data management and publishing.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

  This course demonstrates how the core values of research integrity (reliability, honesty, respect and accountability) underpin all research work. We discuss how The Finnish Code of Conduct for Research Integrity sets out the shared rules for scientific research nationally, and how TENK acts as a self-regulatory body in the field.

  Participants are encouraged to reflect critically on their own research, identify possible ethical considerations and find ways to mitigate risk. As a part of this investigation, we also touch upon the ethical reviews processes that apply to research.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

  Course evaluation is based on active participation to the contact sessions (minimum of 50% of the modules), and two written assignments.

  • Participation in contact sessions and completion of the assignments

  The course consists of four elements:

  1. Introductory lecture
  2. Online learning material (includes first assignment online)
  3. Modules, of which students choose a minimum of 50% to attend.
  4. Final essay (second assignment)
