LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course enables the student to

  1. summarize the principles of most commonly used textile colouration methods such as exhaust dyeing and screen and digital printing
  2. summarize the principles of most commonly used textile dyes, such as reactive and pigment dyes and their relation to textile raw materials
  3. design a fabric collection that incorporates these methods and is based on visual research including a colour direction
  4. document the techniques, materials and colours used in the collection
  5. describe the basic principles of responsible use of textile colouration methods and memorize safe and sustainable working methods in the textile printing workshop.

Content

    The course introduces students to the use of colour and colour methods in the context of textile design: role of colour in visual research and collection building, most commonly used textile dyes and their relation to textile raw materials as well as most commonly used textile colouration methods such as exhaust dyeing and screen and digital printing. The course includes a design assignment: collection of printed and dyed fabrics based on visual research, using the methods learned during the course and involving the systematic documentation of technical data derived from the samples.
