LEARNING OUTCOMES

After successfully completing this course, the student is able to

  • Identify and apply commercial and industrial aspects of textile design;
  • Display the skills and attitude to design, cooperate and communicate in a team, and recognise methods for managing, coordinating and directing creative teamwork;
  • Defend their aesthetic approach and identify their professional objectives in design practice;
  • Design a coordinated collection of textile design concepts and surface patterns for further development and production in the advanced workshop courses.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The course includes an individual design project, teamwork, lectures, workshops, tutoring sessions, and feedback sessions. Students familiarise themselves with textile design methods and processes and are challenged to position their work in the professional and commercial fields. Students develop collection concepts in teams, setting the basis for designing their collection of surface patterns and textile designs. Creative hands-on workshops introduce sketching techniques. Lectures on computer-assisted surface design and repeat-making support the design work. Lectures on commercial and creative textile collection design and freelance work introduce the students to commercial textile design. Students create a surface pattern and textile design concept, with and direct their own specialization and working media through combined advanced studio courses based on their approved study plan.

    FaCT students: the course is recommended to be combined with one or two of the advanced workshop studio courses: MUO-E1065 Advanced Woven Fabrics and Jacquard Workshop, MUO-E1062 Advanced Knits and Knitwear Workshop, MUO-E1063 Advanced Printed Fabrics and Finishes workshop. The selection should be based on the personal study plan approved by the advisor.

       

Assessment Methods and Criteria

    The final grade for the course is based on student’s attendance and participation in the contact teaching as well as group work and the assignments that the students complete during the course. Students must attend and actively participate in at least 80% of the contact teachings. Introductory session is mandatory.
