After successfully completing this course, students are able to:

  • Explain the dominant logic, key principles, process, and methods of service design practice and research;
  • Apply service design principles, process, and methods in their design practice;
  • Compare and contrast between (value) co-creation, co-production, and co-design;
  • Reflect on the strategic role of service design for innovation and organizational change;

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    Designing for Services course addresses application of design competence in the context of low-maturity public service organisation. The course runs in collaboration with the City of Espoo municipality, which provides three to five real-world challenges each year. Typically challenges pilot Espoo service units moving towards "Design as a process" and the internal human-centred capabilities or participatory practices, needed to do so. The course aims to equip students in professional life working as service design managers, responsible for leading, facilitating and mobiliting customer-centred transformations, embedding and developing design capabilities in (service) organisations.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Assessment includes:
    • Individual activity 10%
    • Reflective diaries (3x) 30%
    • Group Project work 60% (1. midterm presentation (10%), 2. final presentation (25%), 3. final report (25%))

Workload

    Overall, workload is 324 hours (12 credits); the course requires full-time work during the period. Students are expected to attend minimum 80% of the joint activities.
