Please note! Course description is confirmed for two academic years, which means that in general, e.g. Learning outcomes, assessment methods and key content stays unchanged. However, via course syllabus, it is possible to specify or change the course execution in each realization of the course, such as how the contact sessions are organized, assessment methods weighted or materials used.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

After successful completion of the course, the student is able to:

  • Design a collection of woven fabrics based on visual research and artistic expression;
  • Document the techniques and materials used in the samples;
  • Understand the basic weaves and their derivatives and the basic principles in designing fabrics on shaft looms and computer-assisted dobby looms;
  • Describe the interrelationship of weave structures and yarn materials to the resulting woven textile.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    The course introduces students to the basic woven structures, their derivatives and different yarn types and materials. The course consists of practice-led studio work, demonstrations, lectures, tutoring, and critiques. Students are familiarized with digital methods for drafting weaves and operating dobby looms. Students explore the studio practices and processes by weaving and designing a collection of fabrics on shaft looms and computer-assisted dobby looms with dedicated warps. The assignment, based on a concept involving storytelling and individual artistic expression, includes documenting the technical details of each woven sample in a product card.

    FaCT students: the course is recommended to be taken in the 1st study year as part of the MUO-Experimental Textile Design course. It is intended for students without equivalent basic knowledge of woven fabrics from BA-level studies at Aalto. Prior discussion with the academic advisor is required.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    The final grade for the course is based on student’s attendance and participation in the contact teaching and the assignments that the students complete during the course. Students must attend and actively participate in at least 80% of the contact teachings. Introductory session is mandatory.

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Overall workload (6cr): 162 h. Minimum 80% attendance in contact teaching is required.

    • Contact teaching: 60 h
