LEARNING OUTCOMES

After successful completion of the course, the student is able to:

  1. reconsider conventional approaches to textile design and define alternative paths to conceptualizing and creating materials as a form of expression;
  2. integrate conceptual thinking, strategic experimentation and explorative practices in the design process;
  3. identify aesthetic approaches benefitting from material engagement and conventional as well as emerging technologies.

Students taking the 9cr or 12cr module also able to:

  1. recognize the new opportunities in the field of textiles in relation to to neighbouring disciplines;
  2. Execute an experimental and cross-disciplinary textile development process in a team.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The course includes a design project, lectures, workshops, individual and peer-support tutoring sessions, and feedback sessions. Students are challenged to develop alternative approaches to concept building. Textile studio courses can be integrated into the 3cr, 6cr or 9cr core course. The workshops and/or the combined introductory textile studio courses introduce the students to traditional and explorative textile practices. Students with advanced skills in textile techniques, taking the 9cr or 12cr core course, participate in a teamwork project within the course and develop their projects in the textile workshops. The results of the projects are documented through written and visual statements (photography). Students develop their ability to discuss the contextualization and impact of their proposed design work. At the end of the course, the projects are presented in a course exhibition.

    Please note that the workload depends on the scope of the core course. The listed load is for 12 cr, with integrated studio courses 3, 6, 9 or 12 cr. With the integrated courses, the workload is transferred to these courses.

    The scope of the module is 12 cr, which can include max.2 introductory textile studio courses: MUO-E1082 Textile Colouration Finishes Studio (3cr) and MUO-E1075 Woven Fabrics Studio (6cr) or MUO-E1069 Knits and Knitwear Studio (6cr) based on the student's Personal Study Plan approved by the academic advisor. After the approval, students should register for the studio courses separately. With integrated studio courses, the scope of the core course can be 3, 6, 9 or 12 cr. Please note: combining Woven Fabrics Studio and Knits and Knitwear Studio is not possible.
