LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course provides the students a concise understanding of the contemporary furniture design practice in relation to the evolving challenges, opportunities and state of emerging production technologies and processes, as well as traditional craft techniques.

Students will learn the critical parameters of furniture design. The objective is to examine how material performances and structures can be appropriated in connection to conceptual, formal and technical aspects of a product.

During the course students will learn the advantages, limitations and challenges associated with production processes interrelated to the nature of furniture industry.  

The projects from Furniture II course can be continued in Furniture III course.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The course introduces an integrated design approach that ties the design process and thinking with the operational side of furniture manufacturing. Students will learn the vocabulary related to advanced manufacturing and material engineering basics. During the course students design, develop and create a piece of furniture in scale 1:1. The projects from Furniture II course can be continued in Furniture III course.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Participation in lectures, briefing, group working, tutoring sessions, project/practical assignment and presentation of the results. Students are expected to document their working process and research. Passing the course requires 80% attendance and submission of all assignments.

Workload

    Lectures, group tutoring and personal tutoring 42 h, evaluation and feedback 8 h , project work 190 h

    There are limited places in the course reserved for Exchange Students, students from Architecture Major and Department of Design. Registration for the course in Sisu and sent portfolio to responsible teacher Tomek Rygalik (tomek.rygalik[a]aalto.fi). The applicants will be informed about acceptance or rejection during the week before the period starts.
