LEARNING OUTCOMES

The course explores the different social, cultural and functional needs and phenomena currently shaping the design of furniture.

The course challenges the formal typologies and encourages conceptual investigation, speculative thinking and experimentation with structures, materials and processes.  

During the course students will investigate how to practically respond to the critical design challenges of the contemporary world and the competitive industry, developing they own unique perspective on the design goals and process.

The projects from Furniture II course can be continued in Furniture III course.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The course introduces critical design thinking and creative problem solving in a challenging and competitive environment. The students will learn relevant furniture design architypes. Students will experience how to communicate and work in a multidisciplinary setting. During the course students design, visualize and create a piece of furniture in scale 1:1. The projects from Furniture II course can be continued in Furniture III course.

Assessment Methods and Criteria

    Participation in lectures, briefing, group working, tutoring sessions, project/practical assignment and presentation of the results. Students are expected to document their working process and research.

    There are limited places in the course reserved for Exchange Students, students from Architecture Major and Department of Design. Registration for the course in Sisu and sent portfolio to responsible teacher Tomek Rygalik (tomek.rygalik[a]aalto.fi). The applicants will be informed about acceptance or rejection during the week before the period starts.
