LEARNING OUTCOMES

Student broadens their perceptions of authorship connected to contemporary themes of filmmaking.  By exploring various themes of representation, new forms and political aspects of cinema, student deepens their knowledge on cinema as an artform and director’s artistic function in filmmaking. This course serves as a possible artistic or theoretical basis for directing students to finding practice-based ideas for their MA thesis.

  • student has basic skills to construct and communicate their personal director identity as a professional practitioner
  • student understands the basics of authorship theory formation

Content

    This masterclass course focuses on exploring director’s profession as an artist. The course consists of seminars by visiting artists, case-studies and group discussions, analysis assignments to provide directing students an in-depth perspective, conceptual knowledge on directorial practices, artistic means of directors.

    On the basis of students’ interests course content may focus on themes e.g.

    • contemporary technical innovations and experimental cinema
    • experimental methodologies for future filmmaking
    • diverse concepts from guerrilla filmmaking to autobiographical filmmaking
    • genre-bending filmmaking
    • cinema of the oppressed: radical cinema forms

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Required attendance in contact teaching, group sessions and accomplishment of independent work assignments. Course performance is assessed according to active participation in lectures, discussions, feedback, screenings and visits. Completing the given tasks in the given time and the quality of independent project work is also weighed.

    The course (2 cr) consist of multiple teaching methods e.g. lectures, case-study, group discussions, presentations, writing/analysis assignments, independent and group work, screenings. Requires attendance in contact sessions including group, peer review and independent work.

    Registration for courses is confirmed by attending the first class of the course. Students who drop out of the course without good reason will fail the course. At least 80% participation in face-to-face teaching is mandatory to complete the course. If, due to absences, the student does not achieve the learning outcomes defined in the course description, the remaining 20% may have to be compensated as determined by the responsible teachers of
    the course. All absences must be reported to the teachers in charge. The responsible teachers of the course will specify the necessary compensating assignments
