LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Students learn the history, possibilities and challenges of the big stage through lectures and workshops
  • Students become acquainted with the technology of the big stage and the possibilities of the theatre machinery
  • Students get to know the structure of the theatre as well as its methods of production and working
  • Students gain a physical experience of the space and how to command it, understanding the reach of their own expression
  • Together with their collaborators, students learn how to carry out the visionary advance planning required when working on the big stage
  • Students understand the demands and possibilities connected to the work distribution, hierarchy, work safety, communication and scheduling when working on the big stage and in a big team
  • Through the professional role they hold within their own degree programme, students learn the special features of artistic work within the context of the big stage
  • Students gain experience of the choir as a stage element, working method and dramaturgical possibility within the context of the big stage
  • Students learn to work and communicate with the staff of the big stage

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The Big Stage is a stage workshop comprising advance planning and theory. Based on their own professional fields, students become familiar with the special features of the big stage in an atmosphere open to experimentation. Teaching is implemented as a collaboration between the Theatre Academy and Aalto ARTS costume design. The course is implemented in cooperation with a professional theatre.

Assessment Methods and Criteria
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Attendance, active participation and contribution to group work.
    Assessment is based on the student's personal development and process of pre-production, production, demo performance, including critical reflection.

Workload
  • valid for whole curriculum period:

    Lectures, presentations and discussions 49 hours, group work, independent work and reflection 194 hours.
