The auteur as Entertainer: Matti Kassila
Matti Kassila was one of the most successful as well as inventive Finnish masters of the 1940s till 1980s – a period of massive changes in the spheres of politics, social life and cinematic aesthetics alike. Kassila handled every genre with equal excellence and managed every scale of production with the same ease; also, he worked with probably every major star of his era. Kassila was a directing professional through and through – as well as an auteur with his themes and convictions. Watching choice examples of Kassila's œuvre, we'll learn a lot about the pleasures of the later stages of classical Finnish cinema as well as the perils and problems of the post studio period. Through this, we'll discuss how deeply personal thoughts can take shape into entertainments meant to please the widest of audiences.
