LEARNING OUTCOMES

Through film history thematic courses with variable content, students deepen their knowledge of the history of film.

Students become acquainted with different areas of film history, such as film genres, major directors, special themes, or interplay between film and other arts.

Film history thematic courses with variable content provide students with tools for analyzing and interpreting films and for discussing them critically.

Students are able to enrich their artistic expression through the knowledge of films, past and present.

  More Than Laughs: Ealing Studios as a Mirror of British Classical Cinema

  In the 1940s and '50s, the London-based Ealing Studios enjoyed a streak of massive international successes with a style of comedy that was broad and sophisticated at the same time. Since then, the studio's history has been told with an almost exclusive focus on these works – with Ealing's contributions to key British genres like crime films, melodramas and war movies getting sidelined. In this course we'll get a concise introduction to British cinema of the studio era through the prism of Ealing, as well as how those studios worked. Most importantly, though, we'll find out how these world-famous comedies are but variations of themes addressed with equal excellence by Ealing's productions in other popular genres. 

   

  
  

Assessment Methods and Criteria

  Evaluation on a scale of 0-5, based primarily on the essay or other individual assignment approved by the teacher in charge.

  The course is graded from 0 to 5.

  The final grade is based on the personal assignment (essay) and active participation during the course.
  

Workload

• valid for whole curriculum period:

  At least 80% participation in face-to-face teaching is mandatory to complete the course. If, due to absences, the student does not achieve the learning outcomes defined in the course description, the remaining 20% may have to be compensated as determined by the responsible teachers of the course. All absences must be reported to the teachers in charge. The responsible teachers of the course will specify the necessary compensating assignments.

  Contact teaching: lectures, screenings, discussions (approx. 30 hours).

  Independent work: essay or other individual assignment approved by the teacher in charge (approx. 24 hours).
