LEARNING OUTCOMES

After the course, the student will be able to:

  • Choose a correct analytical technique for investigating a certain property in a bio-based sample
  • Possess hands-on skills in sample preparation, measuring and interpreting the data for physical and chemical characteristics of bio-based samples
  • Understand the hierarchical morphology of plant fibres from analytical point of view
  • Master the multiple length scales in biomass from atomic scale to macroscopic objects
  • Apply the principles of spectroscopy, scattering, chromatography, microscopy and mechanical characterization into bio-based materials

    Spectroscopy: nuclear magnetic resonance, Raman, infrared; Microscopy: atomic force microscopy, electron microscopy; Colloidal techniques: dynamic light scattering, conductometric titration; X-ray scattering: small and wide angle scattering; Physical testing: tensile test, optical properties; Chromatography: high performance liquid chromatography and size exclusion chromatography.
