LEARNING OUTCOMES
After the course the students will be able to:
- Utilize public databases and analyze sequence data to search for potential enzymes and to predict enzymatic functionalities.
- Assess methods to evaluate related enzyme activities.
- Design genetic engineering strategies to modify proteins leading to improved or altered performance or to novel or improved products.
- Visualize and analyze the structure-function relationship of enzymes.
- Justify strategies for the recombinant production and purification of enzymes from different origin and with different cofactor requirements.
- Design a scientific or a research and development project relating to the application of enzymes to address academic, industrial, or societal problems.
- Critically analyze and assess relevant literature and apply it to solve challenges in enzyme design.
- Report and discuss scientific results in oral and written form.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content

The course covers aspects which are relevant to both academic research and industrial applications revolving around enzymes. Topics covered include enzyme production, methods to assess enzyme activities and kinetics, as well as in-depth understanding of the current methods used to design and engineer proteins. The learnings will be applied to relevant case studies to illustrate the diversity of enzyme applications and to analyze the suitability of the varying methods used to select, design and produce enzymes.
