LEARNING OUTCOMES

After the course the student will be able to:

  • Understand and justify chemical reactivity based on molecular orbital theory.
  • Propose curved arrow mechanisms for complex organic reactions.
  • Understand and justify selectivities.
  • Understand stereoelectronic effects and be able to carry out conformational analyses for complex molecules.

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    Developing a comprehensive understanding of organic structure and reactivity from first principles. Describing complex multi-step organic reactions using curved arrows and molecular orbitals. Using thermodynamic and kinetic arguments to justify chemical reactivity and selectivity. Advanced stereochemistry and conformational analysis of acyclic and cyclic systems.

    After the course a student will have the theoretical tools needed to understand organic chemistry pertaining to e.g. natural product total synthesis, medicinal chemistry, polymer chemistry, biomass chemistry and supramolecular chemistry.
