LEARNING OUTCOMES
After the course the student:
knows different unit operations in finishing and converting
understands how different materials are deformed in converting operations
understands how these material properties affect and influence converting operations and further on converted structure’s properties
is able to apply theoretical knowledge on material properties to calculate critical product properties

CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD
Content
valid for whole curriculum period:
The purpose of the course is to introduce the student to the various unit operations in-line and after paper and board machine lines in surface treatment, finishing and converting of paper and board products. Converting operations include e.g. slitting, cutting, creasing, sheeting, gluing, embossing, impregnation, lamination barrier coating and treatment processes. effects and influence of these operations and treatments on the product quality parameters is discussed.
In addition, the basics of packaging technology and use of the converted materials in packaging is discussed. A variety of most common products are studied with particular attention to their properties and end-use.
Assessment Methods and Criteria
valid for whole curriculum period:
Two essays on selected topics (2x10 p) and oral end discussion (short exam) 20 p. Exercises: 3 x 20p.
Total 100 points
Workload
valid for whole curriculum period:
There are three exercises. The first exercise is a product analysis of a converted product. The second one aims to create a virtual multi-layer cartonboard structure with a maximized bending stiffness. The third exercise familiarizes the student with corrugated box strength calculation.
Literature and theoretical part: Two essays on selected topics (2x10 p) and oral end discussion (short exam) 20 p. Exercises: 3 x 20p.
