  • Special assignments have an instructor and a supervisor, who may be the same person.

If you do not have an instructor or a topic, please contact possible supervisors or the teacher in charge of the course.

The supervisor is a professor or lecturer at the Department of Applied Physics, or at other technical schools at Aalto. In the latter case, the student should contact the responsible teacher of the course beforehand. The supervisor approves the topic of the special assignment, assigns a capable instructor, follows the completion of the assignment, approves the final report, and together with the instructor, agrees on the grade. The supervisor sends the record of the study attainment for registration in Sisu.

The instructor whether from the Department of Applied Physics or elsewhere, needs to have at least a MSc degree. The instructor plans the work together with the student, tutors the student throughout the work, gives feedback on the written report, and recommends a grade. The instructor must be well acquainted with the subject and interested in it. The instructor must also have personal interest and capability to tutor the student not only with regard to the subject matters and progress of the work, but also with regard to the quality of the written report (scientific writing).

The student plans the work together with the instructor, keeps the instructor updated on the progress of the work at least once a month, and informs the instructor about possible obstacles or delays in the work, need for more support, or needs to revise the plan. The student should inform the supervisor if the work is taking more than the recommended 3 - 5 months to complete, or if the instructing has been insufficient. The student writes the final report supported by advice and feedback from the instructor and submits it for approval.
