Topic outline

  • General information

This page is a common for NBE-E4600 Special Assignment and its old versions NBE-E4510 Special Assignment in Biomedical Engineering and NBE-E4520 Special Assignment in Human Neuroscience.

Special assignments are independent works that the students do at their own pace. The topic is decided together with an instructor; each assignment also has a supervisor (see Sisu for the list of responsible teachers). A special assignment can be, e.g., a laboratory work, a data analysis task, or methods development. Typically, you are working on a real research question assigned to you by a member of a research group at the NBE

One special assignment is compulsory in both the Biomedical Engineering (BME) and Human Neuroscience and Neurotechnology (NEURO) majors. Special assignment is a good practice for the MSc thesis, and it should also be completed first. In addition to what you learn when working at your topic, preparing the written report will improve your scientific writing skills and attending & presenting at the NBE student seminar will improve your presentation skills. You can also do more than one special assignment under the same course code, and include them in your optional studies.

More information is available for Aalto students on subpages "What is a special assignment?" and "Topic for your special assignment?".
