    Instructions for the executive summary

    Executive Summary

An “executive summary” is a summary of the entire report. In your case report, it is a summary of your PowerPoint presentation. It is not the same as a preface, introduction, findings, conclusions, or recommendations; it is all of the above. Depending on the length of the complete report, a good executive summary can be presented in 4-6 well-written paragraphs, each paragraph summarizing a specific section of the report. In your case report, the executive summary is one A4 page of text written in the form of full sentences, not bullet points.

The idea of an executive summary is to help the reader become familiar with what is included in the complete report without having to read it all. However, the executive summary should try to make the reader interested in reading the full report. It should summarize the information contained in the full report, and not include any additional information. There is no need for citations (or endnotes) in the executive summary.

An executive summary typically has at least three audiences – top management, middle management, and analysts. While some of them will only read the executive summary, others will familiarize themselves with the full report in some depth. For a classroom project, the instructor tends to assume all three roles.
