Topic outline

  • Exercise material of each week is published in the home page on Friday of the previous week.. The weekly material consists of 3 home assignments and 10 exercise problems. In addition, there will be 2 lecture assignments in each week.

Lecture assignments (2 in each week) will be specified, solved and returned during the lectures. The time allocated for this is 30 min. Solutions  will be graded ( 0~poor, 1~satisfactory, 2~good) and the outcome affects the final grade.

The compulsory home assignments (3 in each week) are graded on scale 0-2 (assignments 1 and 2) and on scale 0-4  (assignment 3). The outcome affects the final grade. Return your answers through the homepage section "Return of assignments" in  PDF-format. The deadline is Sun 23:55. Please, use the solution templates for the assignments, if given. You can fill the doc version with MathType equation editor https://download.aalto.fi/  or  https://www.dessci.com/en/ use the pdf version and handwriting.  Unreadable solutions (due to bad quality.) and solutions in non-correct format will not be graded. The points from the home assignments should exceed  half of the maximal points before the final exam.

Exercise problems (10 in each week) contain solutions. Solutions to some of the problems are explained in detail during the weekly lecture/exercise sessions. The problems of the final exam (5) are taken from the set of exercise problems and home assignments (65).

You can use the .Mathematica language FEM code of the course e.g. to check the outcome of the hand calculations. The code will be used also in the modelling assignment at the end of the course. To access the code:

    1. Download the Mathematica software at https://download.aalto.fi/

    2. Download and save the file "Fem_solutions" (Mathematica solutions).

    3. Click on the "Fem_solutions" icon to start Mathematica

    4. Open and evaluate "shift-enter" a cell to see a Mathematica solution
