  • Welcome to Principles of General and Organic Chemistry/Fall 2020! This MyCourses workspace is important for the course as most of the activities happen through this. It is also an essential channel of information.

    Welcome to attend Course kickoff on Monday, September 7 at 9:15 via zoom (see link below). We will then go through the important information about the course.

    Teachers:


    The learning process in this course will be facilitated by different activities:

    1. Lessons on MyCourses: These help you to get familiar with the topic and theoretical frame. There will be two lessons per week, ten lessons altogether. Done individually, this is a graded item.
    2. Learning sessions via zoom: These are to deepen your learning. There will be two 45 min learning sessions per week, on Mondays and Tuesdays. These are not lectures but there will be a brief summary on the topic, activities and possibility to ask questions. Every learning session is linked to a Lesson. Not graded.
    3. Excercises on MyCourses and exercise sessions via zoom: Weekly exercises on chemical problems, mainly calculations. Support session with teachers available via zoom on Thursdays. The solutions are submitted individually online, this is a graded item.
    4. Lab work in CHEM teaching lab and virtually on MyCourses: One three-hour lab exercise and one virtual lab exercise. You have to have Lab safety course CHEM-E0140 passed before entering the lab! Current situation with Covid-19 is taken into account, safety and health are of first priority. National and Aalto University guidelines are followed. Please see detailed safety instructions below.
    5. Exam on MyCourses: Digital exam Wed October 21 at 9 am-12 pm, done individually. This is graded item.

    Course assessment (1-5) is based on maximum of 100 course points.

    • Lessons: max 10 points
    • Exercises: max 20 points
    • Lab work: max 10 points
    • Exam: max 60 points, threshold 12 points to pass
    Overall threshold is 40 course points to pass

    Course e-book: Chemistry: A Molecular Approach by Nivaldo J. Tro. Individual passcodes to access the e-book will distributed to the registered students.
