Topic outline

  • Compulsory course in Sustainable metals processing and Creative Sustainability (CHEM) majors

Thermodynamics of pure substances and energetics of chemical reactions and their reactions with simple gas mixtures. Applications of the developed skills to the industrial applications including heat/energy balances.

After the course the student can
    • calculate heat and energy balances in industrial reactors and processes,
    • calculate chemical equilibria between gas mixtures and pure substances and knows the energetic relations of chemical reactions,
    • construct and apply various equilibrium and phase diagrams

Course textbook David R. Gaskell: Introduction to the thermodynamics of materials (2003) available in Aalto University library e-books in the Dawsonera collection.

Lectures on Mondays 13:15-15:00 and Wednesdays 10:15-12:00 starting 26.10

Exercises on Fridays 14:15-16:00 starting 30.10.
Workshops on Tuesdays 12:15-15:00 starting 10.11

Course completion by exam (max 30 points) and workshops (max 4 x 1.5 points)
