Topic outline

  • Curves and surfaces course poster

This course is an introduction to the classical theory of  curves and surfaces,  concerned with visually understandable  questions using precise mathematical formulation and  techniques from calculus: Frenet-frames, surfaces of revolution, curvature, geodesics and Gauss-Bonnet Theorem. The course is  suitable to everybody interested in mathematics and its applications. Prerequisites include basic calculus of several real variables, first year linear algebra and open curious mind. It is possible to pass the course by active participation on lectures and exercise sessions.

Lectures by Kirsi Peltonen on Tuesdays  10-12 M1 (M 232) and Wednesdays   10-12 U1 (U 154) and exercise sessions by Kim Myyryläinen on Fridays 10-12 U4 (U142) at Undergraduate Centre (Otakaari 1). Those students that cannot join physical lectures can follow them online.

    First lecture 14th Sept 2021.
