Topic outline

  • General

Finite Element Method, Spring 2022, period III-IV

    Prerequisites:

    - MS-C1343 Linear Algebra (or other basic++ knowledge of matrices)
    - Knowledge of Matlab
    - Basic knowledge of (partial) differential equations

The course can be passed by two methods:
    1. (Recommended) You complete the final project and get enough exercise points to have an exercise grade > 0. Then your Grade =
    (0.6*Exercises_grade + 0.4*Course_exam_grade).
    Exer
cise grade is computed by the formula Exercise_grade = (exercise_points / (max_exercise_points) * 8 - 3), truncated between [0, 7]. max_exercise_points is defined as the sum of standard exercise points (i.e. by doing bonus exercises and/or reporting errors in lecture notes you may achieve Exercise_grade > 5).

    2. (Not recommended) You only participate in an extremely difficult and hope crushing exam organized at the same time as course exam. Then your grade = floor( 1/2 * (exam_points - 10) ) truncated between 0 and 5.

Course material is covered primarily in the lecture notes and short lecture videos.

    Practicalities

This spring the course is organized remotely. During remote teaching weeks, we offer a questions-and-answers (Q&A) session on Thursdays, starting 13.1. 10:15. In Q&A-sessions, we give support for solving homework problems and the possibility to ask about the lecture material. The session is closed when there are no more questions from the participants.

For the first 7-8 weeks, each week a set of exercises is chosen, to be returned via MyCourses by next week. The exercises will be based on the lecture notes and short lecture videos. A more detailed schedule is in the lectures section. See details on exercise points in the Assignments section.

We will provide guidance for the exercises via an Aalto Zulip chatroom (requires login) when we are available.

Many exercises require Matlab, which can be installed on home computers following the instructions at https://download.aalto.fi/. You should know basic use of Matlab before attending this course.

We strongly recommend finding a group of 2-3 people for the computer exercises and final project work.
