Topic outline

This course will show how to use models to better understand and control complex processes used in environmental engineering. First part of the course will focus on process modelling and the second part will emphasize different control approaches. The course includes two 4 hour sessions per week. Each session will have one main topic and the session will be divided into short interactive lectures with corresponding demo exercises and independent exercises in between. Wastewater treatment process which offers a good combination of physical, chemical and biological reactions, will be used as an example and we will simulate the removal of organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus. The same model principles are valid for every process. During the course we are using SUMO, the most recent dynamic simulator, to build a virtual treatment process to test various processes and different controllers.
