CONTENT, ASSESSMENT AND WORKLOAD

Content

    The students work in a group of 2-3 persons on a research topic. There is a supervisor/daily advisor for each group, who will offer the topic and supervision during the work. 

    At the beginning of Period I, all topics will be published on MyCourses. A central kick-off lecture will be arranged for students to learn detailed information. 

    Topic scope: Purely computational, or hybrid computational and experimental. Purely experimental is not recommended. No limitation in terms of fields.






Assessment Methods and Criteria

    • Daily performance (20%). The grade shall be suggested by the supervisor/advisor. 
    • Mid-term review meeting (10%). A get-together seminar in the last week of the period I to check the project progress. No evaluation grade, only show-up grade. Within a group, giving feedback to each other is enabled to trigger the chemistry needed and adjust the role of each member. Teacher-in-charge will give this grade. 
    • Final publishable report (50%). The length of the final report should be min. 20 pages per group member. Template, structure, and outcomes could be decided by individual supervisors/advisors, although an example template will be provided by the teacher in charge later. The grade shall be suggested by the supervisor. Teacher-in-charge will provide instruction on grading criteria. Deadline for the report: last Friday of period II. Deadline for the evaluation report and grade: two weeks after Period II. 
    • Public presentation (20%). All presentations of all groups shall be held on the same day to preserve the seminar-style in the last week of period II. The presentation time is 20 minutes per group including discussion. Supervisors and advisors will give the grade after the presentation. 
    • Optional deliverables (15%). This is a bonus for the groups that make outstanding deliverables and performance. The supervisor/advisor could give these additional points to award to the group or individuals. 

    In principle, the grade will be given to the group with equal contribution to group members. However, the supervisor/advisor could also suggest individual grades once unequal contributions from the group members are noticed. The final grade for the groups/students will be announced on the MyCourses by the contact persons.
