N.B. Due to a system failure, I currently cannot confirm enrolments in SISU: if you study in the Chemistry major, you are automatically accepted. Please register to the course in time through SISU. Late enrollment is unfortunately not possible.See the updated schedule from Laboratory section! Each student will need five lab sessions. The works need to be done in certain order; follow the colors when planning your dates (blue group, green group etc.)
An introduction event will be held on Sep 14, 10 am (online). Check also a short course presentation. The online registration to lab groups will begin straight after the intro session! The course itself focuses on transition metal chemistry.Despite the ongoing COVID-19 limitations, the lab works are arranged in a normal manner, taking into account a safe study atmosphere (e.g. proper safety distances and small groups). Changes to this plan are possible if the university decides otherwise.
Three lab works are arranged this fall. In those you will:
#1 Synthesize a ceramic, oxide superconductor and characterize its properties
#2 Synthesize a new-generation blue pigment and study its properties
#3 Prepare a photocatalytic thin film by spin-coating
We will work both in the student labs and in the research lab. You'll have a chance to use characterization instruments such as XRD, XRF, solid-state UV-Vis and a thermogravimetric (TG) balance. Additional methods are high-temperature synthesis from both solid and liquid state, gelification of metals, atmosphere-controlled RedOx methods and handling of liquid nitrogen.
In total, each student will have ca. 25 lab hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 9 am till 4.30 pm. Some days are 3 h, some 4-5 h, depending on the group performance.
You will need to write one full report (6-10 pages depending on your personal style) and return short (digi)questionnaires from other works through MyCourses.
For any questions etc. in mind, please message the corresponding teacher Eeva-Leena Rautama.
