Doctoral level (or advanced Master’s level) course
X-ray scattering methods for structural analysis of bio-based materials
Time: 19.4.-3.6.2022 (period V, spring 2022), contact teaching during 2.-16.5.2022
Place: Aalto University, Otaniemi Campus
Number of credits: 5 cr
Teachers: Paavo Penttilä (paavo.penttila@aalto.fi), Ville Liljeström
The topics covered include:
· Generation of X-rays and their interaction with matter
· Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS)/X-ray diffraction (XRD)
· Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS)
· Scattering data analysis related to bio-based materials
· Practical aspects of scattering experiments
Teaching will be organized in the form of lectures, demonstrations, group work, and independent studying. Grading will be Pass/Fail.
The course will consist of lectures on 2.-6.5.2022 (mornings), demonstrations on 9.-11.5.2022 (one half-day per student), working in groups on 10.-13.5.2022 (about 3 full days), presentation of group work results (seminar) on 16.5.2022 (full day), and independent studying at other times. Attendance to the contact teaching sessions (in italics) is compulsory.
Number of students admitted to this course is limited (max. 15-16), participants will be chosen mainly based on information given by the students at registration. Ask and discuss - let's learn together! ForumFeel free to ask or discuss anything related to X-ray scattering and other topics of the course. By asking a question that is bothering you, you will also help others. Specific questions related to using X-ray methods to study your samples are also welcome, we can try to solve them together. Students are encouraged to participate in solving the questions.
