Topic outline

  • Welcome to General chemistry lab course/Fall 2021! This MyCourses workspace is important as most of the activities happen through this. It is also an essential channel of information.

    Teachers:

    • Ville Miikkulainen, PhD, University teacher. ville.miikkulainen@aalto.fi, +358 50 467 1835
    • Linh Tong, Chemical engineering student
    • Weronika Wojnicka, Chemical engineering student
    • Michael Ostapenko, Chemical engineering student
    • Topias Lankinen, Chemical engineering student

The learning process in this course will be facilitated by different activities:

    1. Lessons on MyCourses: Three topical Lessons to get familiar with the topic and theoretical frame. Done individually, this is a graded item, up to 3 course points.
    2. Two lectures (hybrid=onsite and online) at Ke2/A304 (CHEM, Kemistintie 1, main entrance, upstairs) and via zoom: These are to deepen your learning on the topics introduced by the Lessons. Tuesday Nov. 2 and Thursday Nov. 4, at 12:15-14:00. Introduction to the topic, activities, and discussions in relation to our Lab project. Highly recommended to get a good start for your lab work.
    3. Lab project in CHEM teaching lab and MyCourses assignments: Lab project with six lab exercises. Graded MyCourses assignments related to the lab exercises, both before and after the lab. MyCourses assignments are worth up to 15 course points. Lab work is documented into a lab journal, which is graded, up to 10 course points.
    4. Calculation exercise on MyCourses: One exercise on chemical problems, mainly calculations. The solutions are submitted individually online, this is a graded item, up to 2 course points.
    5. Lab report: The lab project is summarized in a lab report. This is a graded item, up to 20 course points. Pass threshold for report 8 course points.

    For zoom instructions, see https://www.aalto.fi/en/services/zoom-quick-guide

Course assessment (1-5) is based on maximum of 50 course points.

    20.00-29.99      1
    <20.00              F

Threshold to pass is 20 course points. Lab report pass threshold 8 course points.

Course e-book: Chemistry: A Molecular Approach by Nivaldo J. Tro. If you don’t have the passcode to access the e-book from CHEM-C1220, you can use the e-book available through Aalto University library (sign-in required): https://ebookcentral.proquest.com/lib/aalto-ebooks/reader.action?docID=5185960&ppg=1

Use the vitalsource platform if you have the code from this year's CHEM-C1220 as there is only five licenses thorough proquest!
