      Course content (for all)

"How to visualize emotions?" Is our main question during these weeks.

This planning course concentrates on finding ways to visualize emotion in film through a practical scene rehearsal.

In week one, after discussions and theoretical approach to the subject, the director, cinematographer, production designer (and costume designer) do their own collaborative research through film analyses on how emotions(s) are carried out in film narration, how they are visualised in practice. In week two, students break down a scene the director has written (in Scene writing 1 course) and find together narrative solutions to the visual world of the scene in hand. Students are encouraged to find an exhibition, a performance or other form of art to back up their visual planning. During the second week these artistic ideas are concretized and made into actual plans which can be executed later. More detailed productional constraints to the plans are defined closer to the course start. Nevertheless, the scenes are to be planned so they can be shot in studio, in one day and in one set with 2 characters only. And the scenes happen at NIGHT, which brings its own challenges to visualising the atmosphere and the content.

The course continues in weeks 4-5 with a crew check-up / follow up when the concrete plans need to be ready. The scenes will be realised in studio sets (can be referential) during the second part of this Night Interior course in weeks 10-12. Post and final screenings in week 13. The execution part will be scheduled separately and has its own course code.
