  • ARK-E1021 - Studio Spring, Urban Design

    Background image

The notions of community, identity, ownership – the urban and the social – are all realized and tested in the sphere of the built environment of the neighborhood – even today with its overlays of digital information and networks of communication spanning the world.

The interplay of the built and the social should inform the striving for ecologically, economically and socially sustainable environments – as the community is the key for planning and designing for resilience in our cities. Existing examples present us with repositories of urban models of forms and typologies – as well as practices and experiences – analytical research of these interconnected environments may give us tools for understanding new possibilities in our own cities and help us innovate solutions and processes for areas in need of change and transformation.

The Urban Design Studio program aims to generate knowledge of the ’neighborhood as commons’ through analysis of multifaceted existing environments through interdisciplinary research; by designing tools and typologies bridging the built and the social; and by projecting tangible resilient, sustainable urban futures.

Working with the City of Turku and taking as a starting point the goal of developing the area of Varissuo, the studio is structured as a set of workshops leading to an urban design process. The workshops help us define the 1. goals, 2. tools and 3. design criteria for an urban proposal for our site, dealing with the questions: how does the built and the social interact? What are the potentials in the urban environment, built and unbuilt of our site? How do you build frameworks for the social? The workshops will directly guide our design work, and the results of the studio will be articulated Urban Designs, providing a general conceptual plan of the site area and more detailed solutions in different scales – focusing on the scale of the neighborhood in its different dimensions (spatial and social dimensions), answering the challenges of future transformations, through resilient solutions.
