  • Reuse of Buildings Studio - spring 2023

Adaptive reuse refers to the process of reusing an existing building for a purpose other than which it was originally built or designed for. It can be an alternative to new construction in terms of sustainability and a circular economy. Using the adaptive reuse strategy can prolong a building's life.

This year we are looking for a new use for the YLE television tower in Helsinki Pasila (Linkkitorni). The 146 meter high tower was completed in 1983 and has become redundant in its function as a link tower. However the concrete structure is in good condition and the basic condition of the tower can be said to last for several decades to come. It is to be retained as a landmark of the area and given a new function. How can the step in the future succeed? What could it be turned into and how?
