Topic outline

  • Welcome to the course "Process Design", 5cr

This course will teach and give understanding on designing processes from raw materials to products. In this course, you will learn the basics of process design, design methodology, research & development (R&D) fundamentals, and preliminary and basic design. The focus will be in the process and equipment sizing, process flow diagrams (PFD), piping and Instrumentation (PI) diagrams, costs and profitability calculations, heat integration (pinch), mechanical unit operations, safety and environmental aspects in design, documents created in design and the tools needed in design. In addition, Aspen Plus process simulation (flow sheeting) program will allow you to practice process design, analysis and costs estimation

NOTE: This course will help you to perform compulsory (Design Project-10cr) in Master education as well as to work in the industry

    The course starts on 9.1.2023 at 14:15 -16; Ke1

This homework is done in groups of 3-4 students and in two parts (groups are the same for both parts). Part A (12 points) of the homework should be submitted latest by Fri 3.3.2023 and Part B (8 points) latest by Fri 17.3.2023 into MyCourses.

Indicate the student number & starting values you used in your homework solution and the members in your group. Submission of the homework must include all the equations used with one calculation example shown for each. Each group member submits an identical solution. More info: golam.sarwar(@aalto.fi); Room: E307

If you do your calculations with pen and paper, take a photo/scan of your solution pages and compile those into one file and make sure that text is readable. All equations need to be presented in your solution with calculation examples. Also, text is needed to explain what was done. MS word can also be used for writing. But, simple Excel file with calculation is not allowed in the homework report.
