Topic outline

  • Doctoral level (or advanced Master’s level) course

X-ray scattering methods for structural analysis of bio-based materials

Time: 24.4.-2.6.2023 (period V, spring 2023), contact teaching during 2.-16.5.2023

    Place: Aalto University, Otaniemi Campus

    Number of credits: 5 cr

Teachers: Paavo Penttilä (paavo.penttila@aalto.fi), Ville Liljeström

Teaching assistants: Aleksi Zitting, Enriqueta Noriega Benitez

The target of the course is to introduce the students to X-ray-based structural characterization methods (both in theory and in practice) and initiate the application of these methods in the students’ own research.

    The topics covered include:

    ·         Generation of X-rays and their interaction with matter

    ·         Wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS)/X-ray diffraction (XRD)

    ·         Small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS)

    ·         Scattering data analysis related to bio-based materials

    ·         Practical aspects of scattering experiments

Teaching will be organized in the form of lectures, demonstrations, group work, and independent studying. Grading will be on the scale from 0 to 5.

The course will consist of lectures on 2.-8.5.2023 (mornings), demonstrations on 8.-10.5.2023 (one half-day per student), guided working in groups (data analysis exercise) on 11.-15.5.2023 (about 3 full days), presentation of group work results (seminar) on 16.5.2023 (full day), and independent studying at other times. Attendance to the contact teaching sessions (in italics) is compulsory.

Number of students admitted to this course is limited (max. 15-16), participants will be chosen mainly based on information given by the students at registration. Registration is over, chosen students will be informed by mid-April. For further information or questions, contact Paavo Penttilä (paavo.penttila@aalto.fi).

Feel free to ask or discuss anything related to X-ray scattering and other topics of the course. By asking a question that is bothering you, you will also help others. Specific questions related to using X-ray methods to study your samples are also welcome, we can try to solve them together. Students are encouraged to participate in solving the questions.
