The Accountor module accompanies all modules in this course. You will implement the core concepts in practice and reflect upon them to deepen your understanding.
Please use the Accountor Customer Support in case you have questions.
Please select yourself in a group and use your group's user credentials to log into the Procountor environment. Please access the logins for your group from the file below. I suggest changing your password as soon as you logged in. The login information in the file is public. If you decide to sabotage other students, you will be excluded from the Accountor module and fail the course. The group-wise login information will be released on 7th Moarch (around 10 AM).
When going through the tasks ALWAYS keep the human factor in mind. Consider actively going through what problems could occur and what implications that might have. In later MSc courses and especially when working at a company, you will be using transaction data that is at least partly inserted manually (just like in this exercise session). Being aware and alert will make you a better controller/manager.
As always and particularly in this course, the more you engage in the exercises the more you will learn.
Assessment of this module will be based on four aspects
1) Completion of tasks is a prerequisite (Pass/Fail)
2) Completion of a test based on your thorough understanding of the used Accounting Information System (Bonus 10 points)*
3) Report where you as a team demonstrate your reflective thinking capacity (15 points)
* The test is the official examination used to certify accountants' proficiency in Procountor. Accountor offered to award you the official certificate free of charge if you meet the official test requirements (high enough test score). This will be a valuable addition to your CV. Note that passing the test requires considerable skill and curiosity (discovering Procountor by yourself). It is not enough to merely do the tasks of the Accountor assignment but you have to dedicate time to discover the rest of it. Last session No students passed the certificate. -
THE Three COURSES - Introduction to SQL, Intermediate SQL and Joining Data in SQL need to be completed in a specific order.
You need to start with the Introduction to SQL, then move to the Intermediate SQL and then to Joining Data in SQL.
This module focuses on providing you with an understanding of database management. First, you will delve into the concepts of relational databases, which provide a crucial foundation for most of the modern integrated AISs. Second, you will learn about XBRL, and its potential in accounting. Third, this module will introduce you to the basics of SQL (Structured Query Language) and some advanced functions. After providing you with the conceptual foundations of SQL, you will get to set your skills as a Data Scientist into practice running SQL yourself in the SQL Practice Assignment! In fact, SQL is rated among the most essential skills among Data Scientists and a host of business job openings require a foundational level SQL knowledge. As such, now is your time to develop your skills from the overall themes of database management to mastering practical means to create tables as well as retrieve and manipulate data in databases using SQL!
After studying this module, you will be able to:
- Explain relational databases and relational database management systems (RDBMS) on a profound level
- Describe XBRL, its potential, and applications
- Discuss SQL basics and its applications
- Understand and run basic and some advanced SQL in practice
To monitor your progress using the completion bar, be sure to perform and check off all activity items at the bottom of this section. The instructors will not monitor your activity completion status but strongly encourage you to keep track to successfully complete this course.
DataCamp Assignments (35p): Introduction to SQL (7p), Intermediate SQL (14p),
Joining Data in SQL (14p)
The SQL Practice Assignment will be completed using DataCamp, which is an interactive learning platform that teaches topics related to data science. This assignment entails completing the courses "Introduction to SQL" (2h), Intermediate SQL (4h), and Joining Data on SQL (4h). The courses provide you the opportunity to learn SQL in practice by completing quizzes and assignments as a part of the 10 hour course grouping/module. You don't have to install anything, but an Internet connection is required to do assignments on DataCamp.
We strongly encourage you to start completing this course parallel to Modules II-VI to get the most out of your learning. These SQL Practice Assignments will contribute 35 points towards your overall grade. What is DataCamp?
Hands-On Analytics on Accounting Information Systems -course makes use of DataCamp to provide you an opportunity to extend your learning into practice and gain hands-on experience using SQL. This course has set up a digital AIS course area where you can find the DataCamp assignment -- I will invite you to the course area personally at your course registered mail.
DataCamp is a beginner-friendly online interactive training and education platform. It's used by companies, universities, and governmental organizations worldwide to help employees and students learn basic data science skills. For the AIS -course, DataCamp provides an interactive, browser-based environment wherein students get instant feedback as they learn SQL in practice.
DataCamp offers 350+ self-paced courses in SQL, as well as Python and R, through a combination of short expert videos, slideshows, and hands-on-the-keyboard exercises on topics such as importing data, data visualization, and machine learning.

This module is the introduction to the accounting information systems. The module will walk you through the basic concepts related to this theme.
We will begin by explaining important terms and discussing the kinds of information that organizations need and the business processes used to produce that information. We continue with an exploration of what an accounting information system (AIS) is, how an AIS adds value to an organization, how an AIS and corporate strategy affect each other, and the role of the AIS in the value chain.
A rough conceptualization of an Accounting Information System:

After studying this module, you will:
- Understand AIS role in documenting transaction cycles (Revenue, expenditure, production, HR and payroll cycles).
- Identify threats to data integrity in each of the transaction cycles
- Master managerial implications of understanding the cycles

As accounting information systems (AIS) grow more complex to meet our escalating needs for information, companies face the growing risk that their systems may be compromised. This module gives you an overview to the key threats to AIS. We also walk through the different kind of AIS frauds occurring.

Because we live in a highly competitive and ever-changing world, at any given time most organizations are improving or replacing their information systems. It is estimated that each year corporate America spends over $300 billion on more than 200,000 software projects. Companies change their systems for the following reasons:
In this module we will be digging deeper into the development process of AIS. We will explain five different phases of systems development life cycle and discuss the people involved in systems development and the roles they play. After going through this module, you will understand the importance of systems development planning, and know the types of plans and planning techniques used. We discuss the various types of feasibility analysis, and calculate economic feasibility using capital budgeting techniques.
System changes often trigger behavioral reactions and we will discuss for example:
- What form this resistance to change takes?
- How to avoid or minimize the resulting problems?
To monitor your progress using the completion bar, be sure to perform and check off all activity items at the bottom of this section. The instructors will not monitor your activity completion status but strongly encourage you to keep track to successfully complete this course.

In most years, more than 60% of organizations experience a major failure in controlling the security and integrity of their computer systems. Risk management is an important part of AIS and in this module we will cover COSO and COBIT risk management frameworks and apply frameworks to real-life situations.
To monitor your progress using the completion bar, be sure to perform and check off all activity items at the bottom of this section. The instructors will not monitor your activity completion status but strongly encourage you to keep track to successfully complete this course. -
We will have a guest lecture on Data Analytics from a director at PwC. You should attend the class. Because you would need to submit an individual assignment reflecting on one data analytics technique from this guest lecture OR discussion on Forensic Accounting Techniques OR from Elsewhere.
