    Digital Ethics and Sustainability

    Welcome to the FITech course offered by Aalto University!

    In Digital Ethics and Sustainability module we explore key challenges facing the environment, society, business and the Information technology sector, and ask some difficult and justified questions about how to address these challenges. These issues are explored on an organizational and a broader institutional or societal level introducing mainstream and more critical views of corporate responsibility, sustainability and the role of business and technology in our society. Then we extend the discussion to look at the digital ethics issues, hot topics in IT such as Big Data and Analytics and related real-world concerns, cost of digitalisation from a sustainability point of view and explore a number of cases that raise the topic of digital ethics.

    The course consists of two parts, both accompanied with a related online assignment. The first part is composed of a series of video lectures on the course topics. This part is concluded with a related quiz (test). In the second part we are combining some domain related theory with our own observations by producing a reflective analysis on the phenomenon.

    After this course, the student is supposed to have increased ability to:

    • identify short and long term future consequences of plans and decisions from an integrated scientific, ethical and intergenerational perspective and to merge this into a solution-focused approach, moving towards a sustainable society;
    • realize ethical and sustainability considerations when developing new products/technologies;
    • recognize and address diverse obstacles in transforming a technology into a business;
    • recognize both benefits and real-world concerns that digitalisation brings to the fields of IT and sustainability;

    To get started proceed to watching the video lecture parts at your own pace. After you are done with them, you're ready to start the first assignment about the lecture contents.

    Hopefully you enjoy learning ethics and sustainability related topics on this course!
