Topic outline

  • This is a special seminar on Large-Scale Computing and Data Analysis, especially designed for students in the Big Data and Large-scale Computing track in CCIS, and students who have passed the courses “Big Data Platforms” or “Programming Parallel Supercomputers”. The learning goal is to study relevant literature related to and perform a small project around a real-world problem using Finland’s largest supercomputing facilitiesDuring this project-oriented course, the students are working hands on with pre-existing tools on challenging problems and data sets in a real supercomputing environment. In addition to working on a specific tool/application individually/in teams, the students will learn from other tools and applications through demonstrations by other students/teams.

The projects will be undertaken in CSC supercomputing/cloud environment (Allas, Rahti, cPouta, ePouta, Puhti, Mahti). To pass the course, you will need to successfully complete the research project in CSC’s facilities and present your findings/solutions in a short presentation to other fellow students, and also listen to and comment on their presentations. Due the limited nature of CSC's resources, the number of course participants is limited.

Course materials are maintained in Aalto GitLab.

Senior scientists from computer science department provide students concise research projects, related reading, and existing codes, and tutorials on getting started in the CSC environment. Currently, the list of topics and supervisors are being updated, but examples of last years' projects are available in Git.

Discussion forum for the course participants will be available in Teams.
